We spent our first out-of-town trip as husband and wife touring the Calamian Group of Islands. It is more popularly and collectively referred to as "Coron" even when Coron is really a name of either one of Busuanga's chief municipality or one of the bigger islands of the Calamian Group. Eto daw ang madalas na hindi alam ng mga tourists na pumupunta doon ayon sa aming tour guide. So there you go.

Muntik na namin hindi ituloy ang trip papunta dito dahil ayon sa balita last November, around 80% daw ang devastated area ng Calamian Group at tatlong bangka na lang daw ang natira sa Busuanga after the region is hit by the super typhoon, Yolanda . Thanks to a TV show hosted by Drew Arellano, aired a couple of weeks after the calamity, nag decide kami tumuloy sa bakasyon dahil pinakita nitong buhay pa din ang lokal na turismo ng Calamianes and contrary to earlier reports (which sadly came from their own Mayor), their fleet of tourist and fishing boats are mostly well and either survived with minor repairs or have been fully restored to operational status.

With my trusty notepad, I took down notes as we explored this gem north of Palawan. The following are selected excerpts from my writings together with our musings.

Day .5 (Pasay)

* 12:18PM - Terminal 3, boarded Flight 5J 531 bound to Busuanga.

(We are on Seat 6A and 6B. Just outside our window is the craft's left propeller engine. Morbid thoughts.)

* 1:34 - Touchdown, Busuanga!

(What's up, beaches! Kitang kita from above yung madaming islands ng Calamianes and their corresponding beaches. Upon landing at the Busuanga Airport, kita agad yung damages sustained from Yolanda. Wala pa din ngang cel signal doon.

* 2:03 - Road to Coron

(The first part of the 20-minute ride going to Coron proper is heralded by an expansive area of grazing land with packs of imported Australian cows roaming around. They call it locally as the Cattle Farm but it's officially called Yulo King Ranch and is the biggest cattle farm in Southeast Asia.

Itinatag ito noong rehimen ni Marcos at magmula noon, walang sinuman ang maaaring gumalaw sa mga baka na malayang nakakagala sa loob ng rancho.)

* 2:34 - Arrival in Coron Village Lodge (CVL)
(We stayed on Room 14, unang room pag pasok ng annex. Nagpahinga lang kami ng konti tapos sumugod agad sa malapit na kainan. Gutom na gutom na kami. Madami kaming kwentuhan ni Kuya Eran habang naglalakad at kumakain sa Centro Coron Eatery.)

Mga Trivia ni Kuya: 

• There are around 23 barangays in the municipality of Coron.
• There are 6,000 islets around the Calamianes. 
• The municipality of Coron became the town center of Calamianes on 1902.
• Coron Village Lodge and it's sister place, Darayonan (literally means "tuluyan") are one of the first inns in Coron.

* 4:12PM - WIFI Street, Port Area, and Luwalhati Park
(Naglakad lakad kami papuntang palengke. Pinakita ni Kuya sa amin ang "WIFI" street, dahil panay WIFI daw ang kahabaan ng avenue na iyon, galing sa mga katabing establishment. Nakita din namin ang temporary Coron Market, kung saan itinayo muna ang palengke ng Coron habang inaayos ang dating palengke na nasira ng Yolanda. May katabi itong park kung saan dating may zipline na nasira din ng bagyo.

Maliit lang ang Coron, yung major establishments at lugar kung saan pinakamataas ang concentration ng tao ay walking distance lang lahat.)

* 4.44PM - Maquinit Hot Springs
(Nag trike kami papunta dito. Sooobrang init ng tubig! Around 40 degrees naglalaro ang temperatura ng pool. Ito ay nanggagaling sa isang dormant volcano malapit sa area. May getting-used-to stage bago makababa sa pool. P150 per head ang bayad namin sa trike at medyo malubak ang byahe papunta dito pero sulit ang tanawin at ang therapeutic dip.)

* 6:46 - Free Time

(Pagkabalik sa tinutuluyan namin, nagpahinga lang kami ng konti sabay lakad lakad around the town. Umabot kami sa Coron Market at bumili ng shades para sa island hopping the next day. Dun na din kami nag-hapunan. Ang menu... isaw at lugaw na may utak ng baka. Bumisita din kami sa plaza nila na noon ay may perya at magarbong disenyo na pang Pasko.)

(Tumambay kami dito dahil may libreng tsaa at kape, kasama ang iba pang turistang Koreano. This is just across the street where our room is. Nice place. Ganda ng ambiance nilang tribal-vintage motif.)

(Just on an island off the coast from the port of Coron is an expansive rest house. Maayos ang itsura nito from afar, na parang hindi tinamaan ng Yolanda. Ayon sa mga locals, sa Vice Mayor daw ito ng Makati. Di na ako magugulat kung totoo.)

(We went snorkeling around this sunken World War 2 relic. Isa ito sa mga pinaka mababaw na shipwreck around the area kaya kitang-kita yung kahabaan ng barko from the surface. Sobrang babaw in fact, na pwede tumapak at tumayo sa isang dulo ng hull nito kapag low tide. Nakakatakot. Parang anytime may kakaway na multong Hapon from sa isa sa mga madidilim na sulok nung barko. LOL. Si Kat, enjoy na enjoy. Nag uumpisa na akong magsisi dahil wala kaming dalang underwater cam.)

(Dito kami nag stay ng matagal. A small island with a fine-sanded beach that belongs to the western islands of Calamianes. Mabilis na na-rebuild ng mga locals ang isla na ito para maging istasyon ng mga turistang katulad namin, bilang pahinga sa napakahabang trip around the island chains.)

(Hindi ako kumakain ng lato. Ever! Pero napakain ako ng de oras dito. Sinabay ko na lang sa kanin at masarap na ulam. Okay na din naman. Sobrang sarap nung jackfish. Tatlo (o apat?) na malaking piraso ata yung niluto ni Kuya para sa amin. Malasa ito kahit usually ang malalaking isda ay matabang. Si Kat, tuwang tuwa sa alimasag niya. Siya halos umubos lahat. Warm Coke is a Shak specialty so okay lang.

We did lunch on a bamboo hut by the beach. Sarap. Naka-idlip ako pagkatapos sa kabusugan at sa sobrang relax. Pagka-gising, snorkeling at swimming ulit kami ni Kat sabay picture-picture around the area. Masyadong malapit ang corals sa pampang dito. Nagkasugat-sugat kami ni Kat while snorkeling.

Nearby, may mga Manong na nagkukumpuni pa ng ilang huts pero bukod dun, wala nang ibang visual evidences ng Yolanda devastation. Ganun kabilis naka-recover ang Coron.)

* 1:36 to 2:10 - Bye, Pass Island... Hello, Coral Garden!

(On the western edge of Lusong Island is a spot dedicated for coral snorkeling. It's an expansive strip of diverse species of coral reefs. Halos lahat ng kulay at sizes ng corals nandito na, coupled with a plethora of equally colorful and playful fishes. It's literally a circus of awesomeness down there!

Frankly, takot ako sa dagat. But the sight of such magnificence eased my anxiety. Nagdala kami ng tinapay, bought earlier, para lapitan kami ng mga isda. Tuwang tuwa si Kat magpakain ng isda at may isang malaking isda pa na nakagat siya sa braso. Akala siguro tinapay. LOL. Bumakat yung ngipin, but nothing really serious.

Nakakalungkot na may mga kalbong spots sa kahabaan ng coral garden. Mga namatay na corals dahil sa hagupit ng Yolanda. Ang itsura niya sa ilalim ng tubig ay parang random gray spots in between long strips of colorful corals. Ayon kay Kuya Eran, may mga ilan pang coral spots na mas malaki pa ang tinamong damages. Taon taon ang binibilang para makapag-patubo ulit ng ganito kadaming corals. Olats.)

* 4:02 - Back in Coron

(Tambay muna kami sa Coron Market para mag street food at yung kina-adikan ni Kat na mango shake. Dito kami nag hiwalay ni Kuya Eran and we headed back to CVL to cleanup.)

* 6:47 - Dinner in Bistro Coron

On our Plate:

• Bolognese Pasta (masarap yung timpla ng sauce at okay ang luto ng bolognese but overall so-so lang, nothing remarkable about it)
• Crepe Suzette (okay sana ito kung walang alcohol, at walang nakalagay sa menu na may halong alcohol ito... sana man lang may notice, pinilit lang namin ito ubusin)
• Bistro Pizza (ito ang redeeming factor, masarap ang crust at perfect ang mix ng sauce, cheese melt, at ground beef)

Magulo yung layout ng lugar. Masungit o hindi makausap ng matino ang mga serbidor. May kamahalan ang mga pagkain. Madaming foreigners na kumakain dito (karamihan ay umiinom o nag-iintay makapag-bilyar o nambobola ng kasamang Pilipina). Walang enough information sa menu. Babalikan ito para lang sa pizza. Pero yung i-rekomenda ito sa mga pupunta sa Coron? Nope. Those should summarize what Bistro Coron is about.

(Tambay ulit kami dito for the second consecutive night. Masyado pa kasi maaga para matulog. Bumili kami ng sariling kape though (Great Taste White!) para mas masaya.)
