[OK na Food Trip] Grandad's Grill and Deli

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 6/25/2014
Intro:
It was Labor Day kaya walang pasok at naisip naming mag Labor Date. The Girl and the Bull came up to be the most interesting among Kat's research but after a call, they were already fully booked for dinner. So we ended up with Grandad's Grill and Deli with their steak on our cross-hairs. We're still on a steak hangover after Mad Mark's.

Nasa Aguirre Avenue sila sa BF Sucat, just across Baliwag Lechon.

all smiles before the meal

Food:

  • 500g Prime Rib steak (cooked medium) served with mashed potato
  • Grilled Tanigue served with green rice
  • Bread with Pesto

We don't care really how it looks and we don't even know how a good piece should look like but we appreciate the gesture. At mas lalo kaming na-excite. After the steak was served and after slicing a couple of chunks from it, sabay namin na-realize na parang sobrang dami ng litid. After our dinner, siguro lampas one-fourth ng kabuuan ng steak ang either niluwa ko or naitabi ko dahil litid or hindi ko manguya ng matino... the other quarter being the bone.

cross between a steak and a gum

Sobrang tigas ng karne. Literally, my plate is swinging along with my slices. Natatawa na nga si Kat. Napapatingin na din yung staff sa lamesa namin (walang ibang kumakain that night) pero wala naman silang ginagawa about it. Mind you, the meat looks really like it's cooked medium.

Whatever it is, that's one of the suckiest steak I've had so far. Nakaka-trauma. Pinagtawanan na lang namin ni Kat dahil hindi kami yung type ng kustomer na nagwawala for our consumer rights.

grilled tanigue

Their green rice is a nice complement too.

pesto loving

They have this complimentary bread with homemade pesto spread. Sarap ng pesto! Gusto pa namin humingi ng madami kaso baka mabusog agad. See, pinaghandaan talaga namin ng husto yung steak! LOL.

Kaching:
Price is surprisingly affordable. Steak goes at 1 peso per gram. Ang mura nun! Kaya akala ko naka tyamba na kami ni Kat ng isang good find for a steak house. Yun pala may rason kung bakit mura.

The other ala carte dishes goes for P190 to P280 and frankly, sana yun na lang ang sinubukan namin at hindi na nag steak.

the menu

Comment:
The staff did not care if we're having a hard time with our steak. Pero generally they are accommodating sa ibang bagay.

ambiance

Sa interiors, it has a homey feel to it na parang pang family yung vibes. Classy yung decors at mga furnitures, with paintings on the wall.

from Aguirre Ave at night

Pero after our failed attempt at their steak, mukang di na kami babalik to give those a go.

Summary:
Steak nightmare. Try the other food items.

[OK na Road Trip] Casita Ysabel

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 6/24/2014
We scoured the interwebs for a place to have a quick and relaxing weekend getaway and happened upon this remote bed and breakfast place in Mabini, Batangas. Kat did all the coordinating with their very accommodating staff, Abby, and we are booked in no time.

We arrived there Saturday afternoon of June 14 and left the next day around lunch.

O & K on Casita's terraced pool

Quick Facts:
* Location: San Teodoro, Mabini, Batangas
* Theme: Balinese
* Type: Bed and Breakfast
* Rates: P4000 to P8000 per head, inclusive of breakfast and unlimited coffee
* Website: http://www.casitaysabel.com/

Found at the southern part of the Calumpang Peninsula in Mabini, Batangas, Casita Ysabel enjoys a breathtaking view of the Maricaban Island in the horizon and sits on a property that is fronting the clear waters where Batangas Bay meets Balayan Bay. Popular for its diving and snorkeling spots, the sea area around San Teodoro and Anilao are replete with marine life. On our second day, the waters are so clear that schools of fish frolicking around the area are visible from the beachfront.

the beachfront on a lowtide

Place
We opted to settle on the Katrina Seaside room which is literally a couple of steps away from Casita Ysabel's "beachfront" (that is a mixed concrete and bamboo promontory overlooking the waters). The beach is nothing to be excited dipping in though because like in any other resorts around the area, the sea floor is jagged with rocks (mixed with corals) and during high-tide the water can go immediately deep right in the shoreline. It's actually better to do kayaking and snorkeling instead.

Katrina Seaside Room (upper floor)

The compound have eight rooms available for rent and since the place is far down the main road (the steep descent can be dangerous for vehicles), all of them enjoys the quiescence of rural living. From the inside of the room, panay hampas ng dagat, kuliglig, at kaluskos lang ng halaman at dahon ang naririnig namin. Totally relaxing! These rooms, together with the lobby, the dining hall, and the spa, are interconnected with labyrinthine passages that winds up and down the place.

winding passages

The garden landscape, architecture, and interiors are Balinese inspired. The room where we stayed have AC (and an additional air cooler if that's not enough) and more-than-basic amenities include a water heater, mosquito repeller (?), a shower area that is separate from the toilet, and an intricately designed kulambo draped on top of a bed right smack in the middle of the room. I read some excerpts on one of them when I hit the porcelain throne (the book was "One Thousand and One Nights").

love that nipa hangout place

Food
Breakfast comes with the booking fee but aside from that they don't sell ala carte. Food is on a "set meal" basis (they vary what they serve daily) and we paid P600 per head for our dinner. It's pricey, yes, but the dishes at least tasted good.

nobody touches my soup

Here's what we got for dinner:

  • Clam Chowder: Really creamy and the seafood flavor is there, but there's only one piece of clam in it kaya nakaka-bitin.
Hinahanap hanap namin yung lasa nito until now.
  • Grilled Liempo: Grilled just right at hindi tinipid ang serving (buti naman since we paid premium anyway).
  • Steamed Vegetables: Steamed just right. Perfect complement sa liempo.
  • Coke: Ordered on top of P600.
  • Fruit Salad: One of the best I tasted.
  • Coffee: This is free anytime.

our dinner... look at that tuna sisig!

And here's for breakfast the next day:

  • Sausage: Tastes like Jollibee's breakfast sausage.
  • Fried Egg: Nothing special.
  • Mustasa (?) + Vinegar: Awesome  homemade condiment. It made their rather dull breakfast set looks (and tastes) special.
  • Coffee: Again. It's free.
  • Bread:  Tinapay-all-you-can.
  • Butter and Jam: All-you-can din!

our breakfast... nope, we did not eat those petal

Their cook is a local so that could explain the good cooking. Just don't expect hotel-type dishes or gourmet plating. You're just in the wrong place if you do.

coffee break

Amenities:
There are three mini tubs leading from the lobby that work as their pool. It's too small that all you can do is dip and lounge in them. Frankly, si Kat lang ang pumatol. I don't see the point of jumping in if I can't swim around.

The place has a dedicated spa room and service called Tre Earth Spa. The price is a bit on the expensive side so we really don't want to try it.

the spa hutt

There are a lot of relaxing spots to lounge in around the place. There are wooden chairs with pillows on the lobby overlooking the sea. We also have a more private one at the porch of our room. A hammock is also serviceable just below the seaside room and across it, there is a nipa hut that opens to the sea. Guests can opt to have their food served here to have a more relaxing and romantic meal.

tambay

The dining hall is on an elevated area. We had our dinner on its veranda where the breeze is soothing and, we have to add, really really sleep-inducing after a good meal.

lobby hall at night

Others:
The place is personally managed by the owner. She looks kind and accommodating, contrary to most reviews we read online. We were also able to chat with some of their staff (Abby and Gil, in particular) and they are equally welcoming as well.

They have a Golden Retriever named Simba roaming around the place. We got into trouble with him at first but it's really gentle and friendly.

it's all green

We basically just spent the day enjoying moments of being secluded from our busy lives. This is the sweet escape we've always imagined. LOL.

Getting There:
We commuted via public transpo from Alabang to Mabini. Abby is kind enough to send out an instruction.

  1. From the Alabang South Station, we took the "Batangas City" bus to the Grand Terminal in Balagtas, Batangas. It passed through the Star Tollway from SLEX. The Grand Terminal should be near when the bus exits the Star Tollway in Batangas.
  2. Jeep going to Mabini Poblacion (or Mabini Proper, or Mabini "Bayan") are also stationed on the Grand Terminal. We looked for the sign board "Mabini"... doh!
  3. We told the driver to drop us in "Mabini Bayan". This is where we can ride a trike to San Teodoro. It's a thirty minute trip leaving the Batangas City proper, passing through the municipality of Bauan, and arriving in Mabini.
  4. From Mabini, we chartered a special trike trip to San Teodoro for P250. It looked expensive to us at first but eventually realized that there's a good reason for it. From the Mabini Proper, San Teodoro is another looong 20-minute trike ride, passing through the town of Anilao. We asked the driver to drop us in Casita Ysabel, but it should not be hard to spot as there are a lot of signage to mark it once in the Anilao area.

On the next day, after checking out, a staff of Casita Ysabel arranged for our trike ride back to Mabini Poblacion where we had lunch on a local tapsilog place with calamares na nilalako sa kalsada on the side before we head back home. Mainit ang byahe but it's all worth it as long as the two of us are together.

super relaxing bed

[OK na Food Trip] Hokkaido Ramen Santouka

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 6/19/2014
Panimula:
Since nung una naming try several months ago, naka-ilang balik na kami dito para kumain. Ito currently ang top recommendation namin (Kichitora of Tokyo is running second) among a surge of ramen places in the metro, with overall dining experience considered.

Yung nasa Glorietta ang madalas namin puntahan. Aside from payday Fridays kasi, hindi sila madalas mapuno or mabilis naman tumakbo ang pila.

Pambusog:

  • Shio Ramen
  • Shoyu Ramen
  • Ramen sets with Pork Cutlet, Fried Salmon, or Fried Prawn
  • Gyoza

Yung shio ramen ang pinagmamalaki dito. The soup base is made from boiled pork bones hanggang sa maging milky ang texture nito at titimplahan lang ng asin. It's topped with chasiu pork slices, fish cake, onions, pickled plum, bamboo shoots (na paborito ni Kat), at iba pang plant-like items na wala kaming pakialam kung ano basta masarap. The soup is served na tama lang ang init, meaning kayang higupin agad at hindi nakakapaso. The noodle is cooked firm and resists a bit to our bite.

the new set meal (with soft boiled egg)

The shoyu ramen is the one flavored with soy sauce. This is not really one of their okay items. The soup base reminds us of instant noodles albeit creamy and with the same delicious toppings as shio's. We only tried it once. Never again. Feeling lugi sa binayad.

There are several set meals to choose from which is composed of a small-sized order of your choice of ramen flavor, a cup of hot tea, pickled veggies, unlimited rice, soft-boiled egg, this coleslaw-like veggie salad, and a combination of either pork cutlet, fried salmon, fried prawn, fried chicken, and char siu.

pork cutlet set

In particular, yung pork cutlet ang lagi naming ino-order. Madami kasi yung servings kaya sulit at manipis ang breading. Hindi yung breading ang nakakabusog kumbaga. Fried salmon is the next best option.

the old set meal (with chawanmushi)

Their gyoza's not bad. Perfect na combo sa ramen. Malambot yung pabalat pero it holds when you take a bite (unlike sa iba na pagkagat mo eh damusak ang laman all over).

It comes in P450 to P550.

The regular sized ramens are priced from P290 to P330. Competitive ang presyo nito compared to most ramen places na nagsulputan ngayon.

Papampam:
May fake food na naka-display sa isang istante! Elibs lagi kami sa mga Japanese fake food kaya tuwang tuwa kami kapag nakakakita neto.

The place is not bad in terms of ambiance, madaming wooden panels typical of Japanese architecture. There are two function rooms though for bigger groups na naka-separate sa main dining area na mas may privacy. Patok yung wooden slab of a table dun.

fried shrimp and salmon

The staff are very attentive to our needs. Kaso ga-ingay. LOL. Like in most Japanese restaurant, they shout greetings from time to time. Whether it's customary or not, it's annoying.

Dati, payments are made by going to a counter near the entrance. Pero ngayon pinalitan na din nila and went back to the usual way where bills are handed to you on your table.

Stick with shio ramen.

[OK na Food Trip] Point and Grill

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 6/11/2014
Pasakalye:

Lakas tyamba!

with Team Core Unite

Pagkain:

  • Angus Burger Steak
  • Pork Liempo Meal
  • Pork BBQ Sticks
  • Chicken BBQ
  • Pinapaitan
  • Sinigang Pork
  • Chicken BBQ
  • Mango Float

Lahat may side dish pang mini-patatas.

liempo
pork barbecue

Yung Angus beef burger ang panalo! Lasang lasa ang pagka-beef, well-done grilled on a sizzling plate with side gulay.

Graham crackers na may mangga. Matamis naman. Okay nang pang tanggal umay.

chicken barbecue

Presyo:
Sobrang mura! I think price is not even an issue when it comes to similar eateries around Baguio.

Combo meals are only P99 at malaki na ang servings nito. Kung gustong gumapang sa kabusugan, you can go for the more premium meals which starts at P150 to P180.

Plain tables and plastic chairs. May neon light signage pa na patay-sindi. Kaya hindi aakalain na may mas matinong makakainan sa looban, with wooden fixtures and a sense of ambiance.

Pahabol:
Kasama na ito sa "must-eat-here when in Baguio" list namin.

[OK na Food Trip] BRGR: The Burger Project

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 6/05/2014

Nagkaligaw-ligaw pa kami sa paghahanap dahil may mga maling references online (at crap na ang serbisyo ng bagong Google Map) but it should be in the corner of Jupiter and Planet Street, a couple of steps from the Paseo de Roxas Gate of Bel-Air Village.

kisame ito

Ang Niyari:

  • Soda Float
  • Truffle Fries
  • Custom Burger

The soda float is simply vanilla ice cream on Sarsi. Nothing really special about it but it's rootbeer so love, love!

should have tried the milkshakes

We've read some raves about their truffle fries so went ahead to sample it. Kapos. Lasang plastik. Not sure if that's how truffle should taste like. Malalaki yung hiwa sa fries. Kulang sa prito, as we want it crispy on the outside. We like the preparation though, the grated cheese and aioli on the side makes a good tandem to put taste on the rather bland fries. We should have gone with Chilli Cheese Fries (chilli con carne + cheese).
truffle fries

Next, the custom burger! Sobrang appealing na makapag customize ng sariling burger, it's a clever gimik na unti-unti nang nagsusulputan around the metro... *ubo* *pizza project* *ubo*! We're really excited on mixing things up from a long list of delicious choices and come up with our personalized burger. Ganito yung steps ng pag-pili.

check check lang

1. Pumili ng burger patty.
Options: Angus Beef, Regular Beef, Chicken, Tofu

2. Pumili ng tinapay.
Options: Sesame Seed (free), Potato, Oatmeal

3. Pumili ng keso.
Options: Bleu, Mozzarella, Gruyere, Cheddar

4. Pumili ng iba pang chechebureche.
Options: Bacon, Chili con Carne, Caramelized Onions, Pepperoni, Onion Rings, Mushrooms, Guacamole, Mango Salsa, Pinya, Jalapeno, Egg, Onions, Kamatis (free), Lettuce (free), Pickles (free)

5. Pumili ng sauce.
Options: Wasabi Mayo, Barbecue, Teriyaki, Marinara, Pesto, Buffalo, Special BRGR Sauce, Garlic

  • Double Angus Beef!!! (P235)
  • Sesame Seed Bun (libre!!)
  • Bacon, Egg, Lettuce, Tomato, Pickles (P45)
  • Special BRGR Sauce (P15)

The Angus beef patty is a HUGE disappointment. I mean, for a burger place, this is the last item we expected to taste bad. The beefy taste is almost non-existent at lasang hilaw. Sabi ko nga kay Kat, ang Angus beef, even cooked rare will still hold a beefy taste. If their Angus beef is as 100% as they claim, then I've already eaten a crappy variant. Bumagsak yung excitement level namin ni Kat dahil doon, especially that just a couple of days prior to our visit in this place, we've had Angus Beef in Baguio and it's nothing short of awesome so mataas pa ang craving namin for more. I also have to mention na hindi mainit na-serve yung patty. Anyway, we'll just settle for their regular patty if there's a next time.

ang burger na OK

Sesame seed bun is just okay. Bacon, egg, and the rest of the shebang made for a good mix to cover up the taste of the bland patty.

The special BRGR sauce is nothing too special.

our dinner

Ang Gastos:
Our burger is almost P300 but you can have a minimally customized one for as low as P150.

So mura pa din generally, considering they have a chill place and just set a low expectation with the burger (kahit supposedly burger place sila).

kisame din ito

Ang Chechebureche:
Upon entry, you will be given an order slip where you can start working on your burger by ticking items on it. Neat process. Kung hindi trip mag-personalize, pwede naman mag order sa mga preset burgers nila which starts at P170 to P220.

cute chalk work

Mapapansin agad ang uber cute doodles around the place. We love it! In general, the place is very homey. Masarap tumambay.

cute interiors

Self service dito, from water to utensils kelangan hingiin sa counter. Okay mag entertain ng mga questions about the ingredients yung mga staff. They are nice and friendly.

four of us

Ang Buod:
Talo talaga yung lasa nung burger patty. If just to have an analogy, mas masarap pa yung patty ng Wendy's burger, and that's fastfood shit.
