An index of all our food commentaries. Nakakagutom!

Those with asterisks (*) do not have their own write-ups. They are written as a quick review inside a random article so just look for them. They're in there somewhere. LOL.

Those with double asterisks (**) are more of a coffee place than a food house.

Those with triple asterisks (***) are from our 2011 food trip "Project 12x2-1".

[OK na Kape Trip] The Curator Coffee and Cocktails

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 5/22/2014
Intro:

guy and pip at the Curator

Still a part of our cousin's quest to introduce us to third wave coffee experience, we landed in a speakeasy-esque cafe slash cocktail bar very close to the office but we never know existed until lately. Kaya manghang-mangha kami na after working around the area for a couple of years, may hidden haven pala along C. Palanca street where we can spend time to escape the rigors of the daily grind and enjoy a good cup.

Hello, The Curator!

on one of their walls

On the Table:
  • Tapa Sandwich
  • Belgian Chocolate Cookie
  • Espresso Number 2, Lamill Bliss (espresso + milk)
  • Iced version of Espresso Number 2

taptilog = tapa, tinapay, itlog

Who would have thought of creating a sandwich out of tapa and itlog? Parang tapsilog ito na tinapay instead of sinangag. The beef is a bit on the chewy side but we love the whole idea of tapa on bread and it tastes great, so we're good with it.

kape at tsokolate

We also loved the chocolate cookie. Manipis nga lang. Pero can't go wrong with the belgian chocolate. I cried manly tears in sweetness.

Just like in most third wave coffee houses, better talk with the barista on how you want your coffee prepared. Mas educational din kung magtatanong sa kanila about the whole coffee-making procedure. They are very willing to discuss it. For my cup, I've always wanted it not too full bodied and less yung bitter taste dahil hindi naman talaga ako kape adik, so I told them about it. The staff suggested I might be looking for their YKW blend (made from fruity and sweet beans). Kaso it's seasonal at wala nung time na nandun kami.

the menu

So I settled with the lamill coffee, a dark roast variant pero may sweetness pa din. Take note, kapag sinabing "sweet" on most third wave coffee offerings, don't expect Starbucks-sweet. Hints lang talaga ang tamis neto and the coffee is still coffee, meaning mapait pa din. It's always your prerogative to sweeten it up to your liking and in the case of the Curator, they offer sugar syrup interestingly encased on a rack of test tubes. Nakaka-aliw.

latte
cold brew

I can talk all day about their coffee and third wave coffee in general but to cut it short, it's an experience to try for posers like me and a good find to satiate caffeine fixes for real deal addicts.

Here's something I snatched off the interwebs to give a more visual idea about coffee variants. Para hindi masyadong mangmang, like me.

know your coffee

Kaching:
Mas may kokonyo pa.

Coffee starts at around P130. Yung food ang mahal. Isipin na lang na ang binabayaran dito ay hindi lang yung kape but the overall experience.

alam mo na

Chechebureche:
The Curator will always pop-up in the mention of "speakeasy" places around the Metro. It's deviously hidden inside a winery.

the bar area

By the way, the Curator is a cafe by morning and a cocktail bar at night. We haven't tried going there at their "night" mode which usually starts at 6PM onwards on weekdays, pero inabot na kami dun minsan ng past 6PM at dumadami na yung mga taong mukang naghahandang uminom. LOL.

That's "coffee time". Very discreet.

that's their logo

The interior design is a queer art by itself. Surrounded by unfinished walls and ceiling, the decors are quaint and easily piques interest. The lights are dim which makes for a good relaxing feel. Walang orasan sa paligid kaya talagang "escape" siya from the bustling "outside" world.

The staff are all willing to converse about their coffee and it can be educational. May kakilala pa si Kat from them from highschool who gave us names of the other third wave coffee places around the area.

a wall of whatnots

Personally, I'm indifferent on writing about this place and contribute to more people finding about it because frankly we don't want its vibes spoiled by being overcrowded. Think Starbucks on a payday Friday night. Kablam! But that part of us who wanted our awesome experiences shared with others won so there. Go!

In Short:
A sweet escape from work.

[OK na Food Trip] Kichitora of Tokyo

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 5/19/2014
Ang Pasakalye:
In our hunt (which is really more of a craving) for more ramen variants around Makati, we decided to try this one out in Glorietta 5 as recommended by an officemate.

kichitora

Ang Kinain:

  • Paitan Ramen Zenbu no Se
  • Gyoza
  • House Tea

Yung Paitan Ramen Zenbu no Se ang best seller nila kaya yun ang niyari namin. May mas normal version nito, yung Paitan Ramen lang but the "Zenbu no Se" version has more meat toppings (chicken or pork chasu) mixed with seaweeds, soft-boiled egg, at iba pang garnish.

"Paitan" means "milky" which is evident on their white sauce na gawa sa matagal na pinakulaang chicken bones at collagen. As in!

chicken broth

The noodle is cooked al dente pero dapat wag magpa tumpik tumpik sa pagkain dahil habang tumatagal, lumalambot yung noodles sa init ng sabaw.

The gyoza is not bad but there's nothing noteworthy either. Sakto lang lahat, from the size of each dimsum up to how it was cooked. Masarap yung sawsawan nilang toyo.

ala carte

Ang Gastos:
Averagely priced yung ramen nila (which should be around P350), comparing it with most of the well-known ramen places ngayon (plus 10% service charge).

ramen

Ang Hirit:
Meron silang branch sa Shibuya! Walang kinalaman sa dining experience namin but it's nice to know. Trip kasi makapunta ni Kat doon someday.

Anyway, hindi ko nagustuhan na may kinakausap na ibang waiter yung staff na kumukuha ng order namin while we are at it. It's just rude.

The place is well-designed with Japanese ornaments. There were bamboos and floral tiles, at malaking mural ng tigre sa isang dingding. I'm not sure about the dark stone wall though. Parang hindi bagay sa theme. But that's just me (anong kinalaman ko sa interior design).

cute tiles

Ang Buod:
Kabalik-balik yung paitan ramen! If only we're rich and can afford to do it at least every other day. But alas, the coffers are limited.

We are sure to come back though to try the other items on the menu.

[OK na Kape Trip] Commune

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 5/15/2014
Konting Intro:
Nasa listahan ito ng aming "third-wave coffee places to visit", care of the same cousin who also introduced us to Yardstick and The Curator.

Malapit lang ito sa therapy place ni Kat sa H.V dela Costa kaya minsang may P.T. session siya at nakakaluwag-luwag ang schedule, we dropped by to tambay (I'm rhyming, yow!).

view from outside

Konting Kain:
The place is generally a cafe pero nagulat kami (we did not read up about them prior to the visit) na they actually have proper food in the menu.

  • Commune Club Sandwich
  • Capuccino

Konti nga lang ng anghang but it's mainly a preference thing. I'm sure with the amount we paid for it, they will oblige to have it cooked a bit spicy. The chicken is cooked good.

ala eh, gata eh!

Their clubhouse sandwich is only extraordinary in that they used malunggay wheat bread for it. The rest of the ingredients are a bit typical to a clubhouse sandwich na. May chicken chunks, bacon bits at salad greens. It's good enough for me kung hindi lang sana mahal. It's served with chips (na hindi ko alam kung saan gawa but it doesn't look like potato) and salad (with nuts and mango in vinaigrette dressing).

you can find me in the club

We were a bit disappointed with the capuccino kasi walang latte art. Nagtataka tuloy kami kung may mga particular coffee lang na nilalagyan nila ng latte art or special request ba ito (with special pay)? The coffee is quite ordinary. None of the full-bodied hardcore bitter tasting brew that we've had from the previous third-wave cafes we've been to. Not that I didn't like it, hindi naman ako yung coffee person eh so I appreciate the light-bodied ones (kahit instant coffee!). But for aficionados (and even those like Kat who prefer it just a bit strong lang), there's a good chance they will find it lacking.

no latte art... lego art na lang ^_^

Konting Bayad:
Mura yung mga kape compared to those offered by similar establishments. It's "tambay-priced", meaning pwedeng tumambay at magkape dito regularly and it won't hurt the wallet much.

Rice meals are priced okay, considering the taste, preparation, and ambiance. Range is around P180 to P220. Yung mga sandwiches ang overpriced for us at about P250 a piece.

kablam!

Konting Kumento:
The interior of the place is really welcoming. Looking at all the details, it's like telling us, "Sit. Relax. Have a cup."

homey

Service is just okay. We find the staff not that participative when it comes to describing the items on the menu for us. It helps if they can suggest what to eat or drink when asked and give basic information about it.

bar area

Konti Pa:
The missing latte art aside and if one is not a hardcore coffee adik, okay bumalik balik dito para lang mag-relax, have chat-time with people, or just have one's autistic mode on.

artistic shot, less the latte art :P

[OK na Food Trip] Sam Won Garden

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 5/09/2014
Anong Meron:
I met with a few friends from our church community for a long overdue food trip. So dito kami nag dinner one time.

the gang

Anong Chicha:

  • Galbitang (Beef Short Ribs Soup)
  • Pajeon Pancake (Seafood Pancake)
  • Soondubu Chigae (Spicy Soft Tofu Hot Pot)
  • Galbi and Dak Galbi (Beef Short Ribs and Chicken BBQ)
  • Side Dishes (lots)
  • Green Tea

galbitang with rice

Dahil nauna kami ni Kat (the place is really close to our place), nag advance order kami ng Galbitang. Pampainit ng tiyan. Ang sarap ng sabaw! Really flavorful, which is mostly yung rich na lasa ng beef ribs. Muka siyang pinaghirapan timplahin.

typical Korean side dishes (not unlimited though)

The pajeon pancake is so so. Not as delicious as the one we've had in Yedang Korean BBQ (in Pasig) but not bad really. Malasa yung seafood ingredient in a way na hindi malansa. Warning: mabigat sa tiyan.

tofu hot pot

We've had the tofu hot pot in mildly spicy mode. LOL. We don't want to risk it being too spicy to consume. Masyadong malambot yung tofu. Parang taho na ang consistency. Hindi na tumatalab ang chopstick. Natatabangan ako sa sabaw.

the grille

Galbi and dak galbi are grilled in front of us like in most Korean resto. It's served with a number of side dishes - another Korean restaurant thing. Unlike most other competitors though, hindi unlimited yung side dishes nila. One major turn off in our book. The beef ribs and chicken barbecue are tender. It's traditionally consumed by wrapping it up in lettuce together with your side dishes and condiments of choice. Eto ang must-try in most Korean resto and so with Sam Won as well.

The iced cold green tea is for free.

green tea

Magkano:
It's fairly priced at about P250 to P350 range.

Basically it's a good food trip place para sa magbabarkada.

oppa!

Anong Masasabi:
The place is simple. Walang masyadong elaborate design sa interiors. We like it that way because it usually means the chief selling point is good food. Na tama naman for Sam Won.

Merong area for regular seating at may corner for those who want to have it more traditionally Korean, which is nakaluhod or naka-upo sa sahig.

exhaust

Yung grille nila on the tables have this exhaust ports. The exhaust works well. Hindi masyadong mausok yung lugar.

The staff are corteous. Pero sobrang busy nila tignan. Everybody is rushing about. There are two Korean ladies there na mukang sila ang may-ari. Makwento sila sa mga customers. Nakaka-aliw.

K-smile

Additional Trivia: "Sam" means the number five while "Won" is the Korean currency. So baka dun galing yung name ng resto, locally translates to "Limang Piso".

Ano Pa, Last Na:
That Korean resto in Pasig is still our number one in this genre.

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 5/07/2014
Intro:
We spent V-day at a newly established boutique hotel in Alabang (ilang tumbling away from our place) and adjoining their really chic lobby is a branch of Romulo Cafe.

May free breakfast buffet dun yung nakuha naming reservation but we also had dinner there anyway (dahil puno ang Yushoken!).

just a couple of steps to the right is the entrance to Romulo Cafe

Main Event:

  • Pasta Pilipino (Spicy Tuyo Pasta)
  • Cheese and Vigan Longganisa Dumplings
  • Chocolate Cake
  • Molo Soup
  • Lechon Paksiw
  • Fried Danggit

On the Pasta Pilipino, malasa ang tuyo but not really spicy. Nasarapan kami sa idea ng tuyo on pasta. The taste goes well together. It also comes with tomatoes. So perfect sana yung laro ng mga sangkap. KASO... konti ang servings. Yun lang.

pasta pinoy

On the Cheese and Longganisa Dumplings, nalungkot kami pag lapag ng platito. As in I-can-stick-three-in-my-mouth-at-the-same-time kind of bite size. LOL.

uhm... yun na yon?

Redeeming factor ang chocolate cake. Tama lang ang tamis at pagka moist.

Sa breakfast buffet, standout ang Lechon Paksiw. Really? Lechon paksiw sa agahan? LOL. We were joking na baka madaming natirang pork from last night's meal. In any case, masyadong malambot ang pork nito at kulang sa tamis (Mang Tomas?) ang sauce.

chocolate cake

Yung danggit from the breakfast buffet is good. In kanto terms, parang pinag-babaran ng medyas. Haha.

Other choices in the buffet are cereals, loaf bread, juice, and fruits. Nothing noteworthy among them.

Damage:
Mahal. Fine dining price.

A proper meal can get you from P400 to P600. We cringed at the menu.

May 10% service charge.

nice interiors

Others:
Hands up, the best ang interiors ng resto. It's generally modern in design but there are splashes of antiquity in their choices of decors and ornaments. Yung wallpaper ay may retro patterns reminiscent of my lola's daster. At ang color choices nila ay either earth tones or muted green (for the wallpaper). Magaan sa mata.

klasik
monochromatic table setup

Madaming old photos ni Carlos P. Romulo, to whom the resto is named from. May mga kasamang trivia yung iba at old letters for the former President kaya nakaka-aliw basahin. It made me know more about his legacies than my gradeschool lessons. Peksman.

Service is good.

[OK na Food Trip] Ginza Bairin

Posted by Obi Macapuno on 5/02/2014
Unang Hirit:
Nakikita na namin ito dati, malapit sa CBTL (konyo-code ng Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf) ng G2 (jeje-code ng Glorietta 2), during the time we are doing DIY crafts for our wedding.

Akala ko it's just another ordinary Japanese resto.

entrance is entrancing

Ang Nasa Plato:
  • Rosu Katsu Set
  • Katsudon Set

Lahat ng set meals ay may kasamang Japanese rice, shredded repolyo, pickled something (atchara), miso soup, at seasonal fruit. Unli rice at repolyo.

Di ko type yung miso soup (as expected from me) pero si Kat nasarapan (so it must be good).

Saktong sakto. Yung mala-uhog yung pula sa gitna. Perfect pang sabaw sa kanin. Which is tama lang dahil hindi ko naramdaman yung lasa ng katsudon sauce. Medyo matabang.

pork loin

Ang Lagay ng Pitaka:
Around P300 - P500 ang budget. Hindi nalalayo sa competitor *ubo* *yabu* *ubo*.

So again, burn moolah if you got spare.

obi, kamikaze-ing his food

Ang Iba Pang Satsat:
Ambiance is awesome. It can get really noisy though kapag peak hours, with the way the tables are set up. Medyo magkaka-dikit na eh.

Laging mukang busy ang mga crew. Hindi sila nauubusan ng ginagawa. So medyo mahirap tumawag ng pansin. Walang may gusto makipag eye contact. LOL.

kat, digs in

The menu is straightforward. Aside from some Japanese jargons (na itanong na lang kasi sa waiter kung ano... oks lang yun, peksman!), madali na intindihin yung karamihan ng mga food items. Nakaka-aliw din basahin yung mga excerpts.
